French
At SBSP, we follow the Language Angels French curriculum, providing pupils with the skills and enthusiasm to communicate in another language while developing an appreciation of different cultures. Learning French broadens pupils’ horizons, enhances their communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and encourages curiosity about the wider world.
The Language Angels scheme offers a clear, structured and progressive programme from Key Stage 2 onwards, ensuring children revisit and build on prior knowledge each year. Lessons are engaging and interactive, enabling pupils to gain confidence in speaking in full sentences, using accurate pronunciation, and applying vocabulary and grammatical structures in both oral and written contexts.
Our curriculum introduces pupils to a wide range of topics, from everyday conversational language such as greetings, dates and weather, to more specific vocabulary areas like animals, fruits, vegetables, clothing, school life, and hobbies. Each unit incorporates phonics work to develop accurate pronunciation and intonation. Cultural awareness is embedded throughout, with opportunities to learn about French-speaking countries, their customs, festivals, and traditions.
Progression is carefully planned: in Year 3, children begin with the foundations of phonics, basic greetings, and simple vocabulary such as seasons and animals. By Year 6, they can hold conversations, describe people and events, express opinions, and write at greater length using a wider range of grammatical structures.
Through consistent practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, pupils learn to:
-
Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of sources.
-
Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity.
-
Write for different purposes using the grammatical structures they have learned.
-
Appreciate and respect different cultures and traditions within the French-speaking world.
Our aim is for every pupil to leave SBSP with a solid foundation in French, a positive attitude towards language learning, and the confidence to build on their skills in secondary school and beyond.
